A Festival for Dionysus

Dionysus really loved his reds. In Greek mythology, Dionysus was the god of wine and fertility, responsible for good drunks, bad drunks, happy drunks, angry drunks, chatty drunks… and the passion that may or may not follow after having said wine. I think I would have really liked him. πŸ™‚

ColourPop’s Ultra Matte liquid lipstick in LAX reminds me of a full-bodied Cabernet, my favorite type of red wine. I usually don’t go for really dark lip colors, but something has gotten into me lately where I just feel sexy when I wear them, especially LAX.

LAX has two sides to it, just like Dionysus. While I really love how it looks on me and makes me feel, it is the most difficult Ultra Matte I have tried from ColourPop.

LAX goes on semi-opaque, for one; something I was not expecting, and it has the tendency to bleed. I had to use concealer to straighten up the edges. In total, I applied three coats to get it just right. During festivals, people eat and drink and partake in merriment until night’s end. I found that after eating, and drinking, and being merry, the color had faded a bit on my inner lips. Because this color is somewhat drying and I needed lip balm, I opted to partially remove the lipstick before reapplying.

For this look, I really wanted to dress it down. To do that, I decided not to apply my signature thick black line to my lids. Instead, I just applied mascara to my lashes and some liner on my waterline (Benefit BadGal). On my cheeks, I went with Sephora’s Perfection Mist Airbrush blush in Pink of Perfection, which as it turns out, is pretty hard to capture with the camera on my face in natural light. But in artificial light, and by that I mean in my bathroom looking in the mirror, this blush is magnificent.

Now there is kind of a learning curve to making this work. I tried spraying this directly on my face, which was a good learning experience but was quite startling, as the trajectory of the spray was too wide and I ended up spraying everything near the side of my face. I find it’s best to spray this a few times directly on the brush at close proximity and pat it on the apples of my cheeks all the way up to my temples.

It’s subtle and it’s beautiful and it’s waterproof! After swatching, I tried washing my arm off with water and the color did not budge; I was scrubbing too. The blush has gold highlights in it as well, so it can double as a highlighter. The blush lasts on me throughout the day until I take it off.

Enough chat. Time for wine.
