I am a huge fan of Erborian, so when I saw a few reviews of their new Black Cleansing Oil giving it high marks I had to get mine out there in the world. This has been sitting in my review queue for some time because I had to be completely sure of how I felt about it.
My skin type
Oily, acne scarring on cheeks and chin; texture issues on cheeks.
What it’s supposed to do
Clean your face. It’s black because of the charcoal that’s in it. I used to be attracted to products with charcoal in it, but that faded after I couldn’t find any science or proof to back up product claims.

How I use it
I started out using this as I use other cleansing oils, on dry skin to remove makeup and the days residue. That didn’t work out because of the texture of this product. The oil tries to sud up a little bit (like rubbing hand soap on your dry skin) and turns a bit gray, but falls short and just turns into a paste-like substance. I find it more useful as a cleanser on a wet face. The instructions say to use it on a dry face and massage over eyes and lips. Yeah, don’t do that. Don’t put this anywhere near your eyes. It doesn’t burn like Sunday Riley’s CEO cleansing oil, but it definitely feels irritated, like you have something foreign in your eye.
How long I used it
I have been dallying with this cleanser since the middle of April.
What I like about it
Ummm the packaging…? I can’t say I like anything else about this product.
What could be better
This is not a traditional cleaning oil… I must say, I was truly disappointed when I realized this because I was pretty excited about it and expected this to bring me joy. It doesn’t. I would describe this as a liquid soap. It reminds me a bit of my African Black Soap in its consistency.
Joy Factor
On a scale of 1-10, for me, the Erborian Black cleansing Oil is a 2. It will clean facial makeup but keep away from the eyes. Which to me, defeats the purpose of a cleansing oil. If they had marketed this as a liquid soap, I think the joy on this would be higher. It was also $29. I could have gotten a lipstick or something with that.
