The Make Up For Ever Underpainting Color Correction Palette quickly caught my eye as soon as it came out. This palette was giving me Pro Sculpting Palette vibes but the sales rep in Sephora assured me that this one is different from that one which I have and really like. This one is more matte and is definitely for color-correcting. There are six shades and I picked up the palette in Dark (50), the second to last darkest shade of the six. I do think this is a palette for a more advanced face-painter, but more on that after a few photos.

My skin type

I have oily skin and fading acne scars. I also have under eye bags that aren’t going anywhere lol.

I ended up actually needing the instructions with this palette. The first time I used it, I didn’t bother, thinking I intuitively knew what I was doing based on the shades of each cream. By the way, these are slightly creamy; a different texture than the Pro Sculpting Palette. I would say these are drier or more matte creams if that makes sense.

I did end up liking the ultimate full-coverage look (see below), but it became immediately apparent that I had done something wrong when my under eye area started creasing and cracking quite badly. I had run out of time so I couldn’t start over and had to wear my makeup like that. This is not, in any way meant to be an under eye concealer for eye bags! Dark circles, sure! But I think if you have both, that could be problematic.

Used as a spot corrector (light-to-medium coverage)

I found the ideal way for me to use this palette is as a legit color corrector; only wear it where you need it, and proceed with your normal concealer or foundation on top. In the section below, I am using it in this way, starting with the second CC50 shade, the lightest in the palette to conceal dark acne scars. You can still see them peeking through at this point, but using this shade first offsets the red in Y535.

Here, I blended in the CC50 shade

In this photo, I applied Y535 on top of CC50 and blended.

This is the final result before applying any more makeup. I prefer this method to the more full-coverage look below.

Ultimate Full Coverage

Now, the first time I used the palette, I went all out. I applied the red CC50 shade to my acne scars, and used the light CC50 and Y505 as an under eye concealer. I finished everything off with Y535 all over. As you can see, this results in a full-coverage look. I actually really liked it but the problem is using this palette in this way will definitely make it run out a lot faster. Also, and more importantly, the formula did not work well for me as an under eye concealer. I smiled and it got all crepey underneath my eyes.

Because I felt a little red, I topped everything with my Laura Mercier Translucent Powder and brightened it up with some Ben Nye Banana Powder in my T-zones and underneath my eyes.

And here’s the final look:

What I like about it/What could be better

I think this is a great color-correcting palette. I bought it to use as a one-stop shop for coverage but found that using it that way wasn’t preferable. The palette is great for travel and I really like the aesthetics of it. I did find that I needed a couple different sized brushes to get to each shade and blend. Again, not a palette for folks just starting out in my opinion, but can be a bag-keeper once you get the hang of it.
