Ciate Liquid Velvet Matte Lip Slick in Swoon (Nude) Review

There’s a saying that goes, “do one thing and do it well.” Well that certainly doesn’t apply to Ciaté.

When I found out they were releasing a line of makeup at Sephora, other than nail polish, which included a liquid lipstick (my current obsession right now), I got excited. So excited, I ordered right away! I chose the Liquid Velvet Matte Lip Slick in Swoon ($18) and Smitten (review coming soon).

Liquid Velvet™ Matte Lip Slick fuses the performance of a matte lip color with lip-conditioning properties for a moisturizing lipstick that lasts. Its triple polymer formulation and high-performance pigments ensure that lips get high coverage with extreme hold. Infused with Ciaté’s proprietary moisturizing PlushPigment™, this non-drying formula leaves lips looking lush with a high-pigment finish.

Right out of the box, I wasn’t impressed. The swatches looked like it was going to be too bright on me and it the tube seemed smaller than I thought (although you do get 0.22 oz of product, consistent with other liquid lipsticks). I do prefer the thinner textured liquid lipsticks and this is definitely more cushiony and velvety. My disappointment deepened… but it wasn’t long-lived!

The application brush is flat, which I like, but the product did go on streaky. However, it didn’t take long for it to fill in and look decent after pressing my lips together and blotting with a tissue. The trick is to:

  1. Line and fill the bottom lip
  2. Press lips together
  3. Line and fill the top lip
  4. Blot with a tissue, and you’re all done!

****If you don’t blot with a tissue, it doesn’t look good– it looks bright and clown-like on my dark skin.

It is worth mentioning that this is not a non-transferable liquid lipstick. It gets onto cups and you will have to reapply after eating and drinking. If you touch your lips, you will see it on your fingers. I do love that it is slightly moisturizing and feels good on the lips. It does dry down to a matte finish quite quickly and will stay there as long as you don’t do anything to manipulate it.

Some of these liquid lipsticks you can just reapply right over the old, but I suggest wiping off the old leftover product and reapplying altogether on this one. So far, I am loving this color, since it’s so hard to find a nude liquid lip stick that looks good on me. This one is a keeper!
